Next Hire Decision → Pick the one role that unblocks your business (and spot the ones to contract or automate instead).

Q4 is when most teams lock next year’s budget, and “we need more people” usually turns into hiring for the loudest gap instead of the one actually capping revenue.

Prompt:

You are a fractional COO helping a [company type, e.g. 12-person B2B SaaS / 6-person marketing agency / solo-founder e-commerce brand] decide its next hire. Be direct and skeptical. Do not default to "hire a generalist."

Business snapshot:
- What we sell and to whom: [one or two sentences]
- Monthly revenue and growth trend: [e.g. $85K MRR, growing about 6% per month]
- Cash position and runway: [e.g. 14 months at current burn]
- Current team and roles: [list each person and what they own]
- Where work is piling up or slipping: [describe the 3 to 5 biggest bottlenecks, with examples]
- What I (the founder) spend my week on: [rough % split, e.g. 30% sales, 25% delivery, 20% hiring/admin, 25% product]
- Roles I'm considering: [list them, or write "not sure"]
- Tools and automations already in place: [e.g. HubSpot, Zapier, a support AI agent, none]

Work through this in order:
1. Diagnose the real constraint. From the bottlenecks above, identify which one is most directly capping revenue or putting existing customers at risk. Explain your reasoning in 3 to 4 sentences and name the single biggest hidden cost of leaving it unsolved for 6 more months.
2. For each role I'm considering (plus up to 2 I haven't thought of), score it 1 to 5 on: revenue impact, risk reduction, founder time freed, and how hard it is to hire well. Show the scores in a table.
3. For every role, recommend one path: full-time hire, part-time or contractor, or automate with current tools and AI. Give a one-sentence justification for each, and flag any role where a contractor-first trial would be smarter than a permanent hire.
4. For the top recommendation, write a 90-day success scorecard: 3 to 5 measurable outcomes that would prove the hire paid off, plus the warning signs at day 30 that it is not working.
5. Estimate the fully loaded monthly cost range for the top role in [country or city] and state how many months of runway it consumes. Mark every number as an assumption I need to verify against local salary data.
6. Name the one role I should NOT hire in the next 6 months, and why.

Finish with a 5-line summary I can paste into a message to my cofounder or leadership team.
