Prompt of the Week 🧠
Year-End Backsolve → Turn your December number into what has to be true this week.
Four months left in the year, and most teams are still working off a target they set in January and a plan that stops at “push harder.”
This prompt runs the math backwards, from the number you promised down to the five things you do in the next seven days, and tells you honestly if the target is still reachable.
Prompt:
You are my revenue planning partner. Today is [DATE] and I have [NUMBER] months left in the year. Help me back-solve from my year-end target to what has to happen this week. Here is my situation: - Business: [what you sell, and to whom] - Year-end target: [revenue, customers, or whatever number you committed to] - Where I am today: [current number, plus the last 3 months of actuals] - Pricing: [average deal size or ARPU] - Current pipeline: [open deals, leads per month, close rate if you know it] - What I can actually deploy: [people, hours per week, cash] Work through five steps: 1. THE GAP. State the difference between today and the target in plain numbers. Convert it into units I control: deals to close, customers to add, calls to book, whatever my model actually runs on. Show the math so I can check it. 2. MONTHLY MILESTONES. Break the gap into a month-by-month table from now to year end. For each month give me the number I need to hit, the leading indicator that predicts it about 30 days early, and the date I would know I am off track. 3. REALITY CHECK. Compare the required monthly rate to my actual rate over the last 3 months and tell me the multiple, for example "this needs 2.4x your current pace." If it is above 1.5x, say so directly and tell me the target is unlikely without a change in inputs, not a change in effort. 4. THE THREE LEVERS. Give me exactly three moves that could close the gap. For each: expected contribution in numbers, cost or time to run it, and how fast it pays back. Rank them. Then name one thing I should stop doing this quarter to free the capacity, and what stopping it costs me. 5. THIS WEEK. Turn lever number one into 5 concrete actions for the next 7 days, each with an owner slot and a done-by date. No vague verbs like "explore," "align," or "revisit." Finish with the single number I should put on a wall and check every Friday, and the trigger point where cutting the target is the smarter call than chasing it. Ask me for any missing inputs before you start.
Where to use it: Works just as well for a quarterly goal, a fundraise runway plan, or any team target that currently exists as a vague “strong finish.”
