Prompt of the Week 🧠
Customer Retention → Diagnose why customers are churning and get a 30-day save plan.
Most founders track churn as a number but never dig into the actual patterns behind cancellations. This prompt turns your raw cancellation data (exit surveys, support tickets, usage logs) into a root-cause diagnosis and a prioritized 30-day retention playbook so you stop guessing why people leave and start fixing it.
Prompt:
You are a senior retention strategist who has reduced churn at 20+ SaaS and subscription businesses. I'm going to share recent churn data from my company, and I need you to diagnose the real reasons customers are leaving and build me a prioritized action plan. CONTEXT ABOUT MY BUSINESS: - Product: [describe what you sell in one sentence] - Pricing: [monthly/annual, price point] - Target customer: [who buys this] - Current monthly churn rate: [%] - Average customer lifetime so far: [months] CHURN DATA (paste below — exit survey responses, cancellation reasons, support tickets from churned users, or usage patterns): [paste raw data here] Your job — deliver a structured analysis with these exact sections: 1. ROOT CAUSE CLUSTERS Group the cancellations into 3-5 distinct churn patterns. For each cluster: - Name the pattern (e.g., "Onboarding drop-off", "Feature expectation gap") - Estimated % of churned customers it explains - The underlying psychological or operational trigger - A direct quote from the data that represents this cluster 2. THE SILENT KILLER Identify the ONE churn reason that is likely larger than it appears in the data (customers rarely admit the real reason). Explain why you suspect this and what evidence supports it. 3. 30-DAY RETENTION PLAN Give me 5 specific interventions I can ship in the next 30 days, ranked by impact-to-effort ratio. For each: - The intervention (1 sentence) - Which churn cluster it targets - How to measure if it's working (specific metric + target) - Estimated effort (hours) and who on the team should own it 4. WIN-BACK SCRIPT Write a short email (under 100 words) I can send to customers who churned in the last 30 days, based on the #1 cluster you identified. It should feel human, acknowledge the real issue, and offer something specific. Be direct. If my data is thin or biased, say so. If a cluster is actually a pricing problem disguised as a product problem, tell me.
Where to use it: SaaS founders, subscription businesses, creator/membership operators, and any B2B team running a quarterly retention review. Especially useful after an exit survey batch, a spike in cancellations, or when planning next quarter’s retention initiatives.
